Wix Website Builders Review: Wix is one of the most popular website builders on the market. That could be due to its 3 different types of editors, hundreds of themes & thousands of plugins. And so, for most people looking for a platform to make a website, this might seem like the right option to choose.
Speaking of options, here’s a fun business life trick: make your product good for everyone, and you won’t have to waste time “finding your audience.”
While some website builders try to specifically target an audience (e.g. Shopify for e-commerce and Zenfolio for photographers), Wix is a very notable exception.
Now speaking of Wix, can it really do it all and do it well? That’s what I’m testing today – I signed up and made my own website, testing all the tools Wix has to offer.

Wix Website Builders Review: Wix Website Builders for different websites
Website type | Benefits | Limitations |
---|---|---|
Blog | Extreme flexibility design-wise has specific tools for artists | Tools are mostly third-party, making Wix more expensive than other options for blogging |
Portfolio site | Strong business features & editors suitable for beginners and intermediate users | Can’t change a template once you start editing one – all content gets deleted |
Business website | Strong business features & editors suitable for beginners and intermediate users | Additional apps cost extra |
Online store | Great eCommerce tools and options for both beginners and pros | The platform doesn’t let you migrate |
Wix For Blogs
Wix is a solid blogging option for both creative writers and emerging entrepreneurs. The Wix blog editor allows you to make formatting changes to text, add bullets, links and more. Wix also allows you to customize the title tag and meta description of your blog post, as well as change the default URL of your blog posts.
However, Wix is one of the more expensive options for blogging – considering the fact that there are many blogging platforms that allow you to publish your creative writing for free. Wix’s free plan is quite limited and carries the Wix branding; their cheapest plan option with Wix costs $16 per month, which is quite expensive.
Wix For Portfolio Sites
Because of Wix’s almost unlimited customization, if you’re looking to create a winning website for your artwork portfolio or want to sell your art online, this builder is a great option. The tools for selling art are all there, and this builder will definitely suit the needs of beginners and more experienced website builders.
Unfortunately, most of the tools are suitable for visual artists: third-party print-on-demand integrations, digital downloads, and visual-centric templates won’t be of much help to artists of a different caliber. Although the builder is very versatile, most visual artists and designers end up choosing it for their portfolios.
Wix For Business Websites
Wix offers a lot of tools designed specifically for businesses, not to mention that you can always check out the app store and get additional plugins for your website. This builder has the best custom editing tools, and when you combine them with Wix’s marketing and SEO features and extensive customization, you’re able to create the online presence of your dreams.
However, although Wix gives you freedom of customization, it doesn’t have all the tools you might need. For that, you’ll have to visit the app store, where for the tool you prefer you’ll have to pay some money.
Wix For Online Stores
Wix offers everything a small business owner could need: a great e-commerce suite, solid tools for marketing and SEO, as well as specific templates for online stores. Visitors to your site will have plenty of options with which to fill their shopping carts: you can sell both digital and physical items. The editor allows you to create a fully customized store and fill it with intricate third-party integrations, such as Google Analytics.
Although Wix is a great option for online stores, it has one big negative point: you can’t move your store. Once you’ve signed up with Wix, your store is practically locked into the platform. Scaling is only possible within the Wix system itself, and the platform does not allow you to export your site.
Wix Website Builders Pricing
Wix offers a total of plans, ranging from completely free to $35.00/month. Five of these plans focus on normal professional sites, while the other three are designed specifically for e-commerce. Overall, Wix’s pricing is quite reasonable and within industry standards.
Here are the website plan options:
Plan | Features | Price |
---|---|---|
Free | A simple plan for testing the platform | $0.00 |
Unlimited | Unlimited bandwidth, extra marketing tools – good for growing businesses | $12.50/month |
Combo | Great tools for simple websites: | $8.50/month |
VIP | All of the above features, plus priority customer care | $24.50/month |
At first glance, it is quite obvious that the prices are quite high.
Wix Free Plan
The free plan is always interesting. After all, who doesn’t like not spending money on something, right? Well, you might want to think twice before counting your savings.
In good conscience, in this Wix review, I simply cannot recommend the free plan to anyone: it has too many limitations to be used for a proper website. Wix ads will be displayed on your page at all times, and instead of a custom domain, you’ll have to use a subdomain with example.wixsite.com at the end. Wixsite is a free subdomain, which brands all websites made by a free Wix plan, and for a business, it looks a bit unprofessional.
Really, the free plan should be seen as an “unlimited trial to test Wix” more than anything else.
Is Wix free? Technically, yes. There is a free plan, and it doesn’t require any of your credit card information. But there are too many limitations.
Wix Premium Plans
In general, all paid plans will allow you to use a custom domain (and also include a free domain name for the first year), add a free SSL certificate and remove ads. And it’s the premium plans that you should choose.
So, what are each of these premium website plans for, then?
But before you jump into a plan, I’d like to direct your attention to the fine print. Let’s get better.

The Site Booster and Analytics application (available with the $12.50/month Unlimited plan), and the Events Calendar (available with the and $ 24.50 VIP plans), are only free for one year. And what happens when that year passes?
Well, not much. All of the website applications (Site Booster, Analytics, and Events Calendar) also offer free plans. But they have their own premium options, which add more listing features, higher visitor limits, and unlimited events. Prices for the premium versions start at around $5 per month. And on Wix plans, you can try those premium versions for free for a year, so you can decide which ones are worth sticking with and which ones aren’t.
Still, it’s something worth keeping in mind, as with premium apps, your expenses on Wix can skyrocket quite a bit.
Wix E-Commerce Plans
But that’s not all! Wix also has three more options, focused on those who want to use their websites to sell online.
Here’re the plans right here.
Plan | Features | Price |
---|---|---|
Business Basic | All the main eCommerce features for effortless selling: get the best plan HERE! | $17.00/month |
Business Unlimited | Subscription sales, dropshipping, and product review features added | $25.00/month |
Business VIP | Everything: loyalty program, sales tax calculation, and priority support | $35.00/month |
And if you are more of a visual person, I also leave you this screenshot with all the eCommerce features of these plans, compared.

Overall, during this Wix review, we found that all three e-commerce plans offer really excellent value. Unlike other platforms, there is no transaction fee associated with any of them. In addition, some advanced features (such as abandoned cart recovery), are rarely seen in such inexpensive plans.
So, which of these three plans is best for you?
And I’ll say what some of you may be thinking – Wix isn’t entirely cheap, and not everyone has the budget to throw in a few hundred dollars a year on maintaining a website. However, even.
Best Value
Don’t hesitate to take a look at the Combo and Business Unlimited plans. Combo offers just the right amount of features at a reasonable price, while Business Unlimited has the best value for money when it comes to e-commerce.
I find Wix’s pricing to be pretty solid. And even though I have a hard time recommending the more expensive plans for both regular and e-commerce websites (seems like too much extra money for not enough features!), I still find it all to be a solid experience. If you’re looking for a cheaper solution, our list of budget website builders (with great value for money) may come in handy,
Is Wix easy to use?
Wix offers an all-in-one website-building experience: hosting, domains, and website management are all available under one hood. And if you already have your own domain purchased elsewhere, you can easily connect it to Wix. And overall, that part makes using Wix pretty straightforward.
As for making your own website…whether or not Wix is easy there depends on the approach you choose to follow.
It is the variety of options that will cause the most headaches.
And before you choose whether you want to use Wix to make your website, you should see all those headaches in action – that’s why I’m writing this Wix review!
So, take the passenger seat next to me, and let’s roll. In this part, I’m going to make my own Wix website. In fact, I’ll show you what I’ve got right here:

Here’s what the experience was like.
Getting started with Wix
The registration process was pretty straightforward. Honestly, before they ask for your name, you have to tell Wix what kind of website you are planning to make.

Next, you will have to choose one of the two editor options.

Now, don’t waste your time contemplating for hours here. All of these options can be changed and reversed. You can use one Wix account to make multiple websites, and each time, this is the screen you’ll see. So go with what you think works best for you. If not, you can always do it all over again!
What are these options like?
Wix ADI
For beginners who don’t want to get into the hassle of using a drag-and-drop editor, I think Wix Artificial Design Intelligence is a brilliant option.
If you opt for it, all you will have to do is answer a few fundamental questions describing your ideal site. The self-proclaimed algorithm will then combine all the answers, your computer will go by, and your website will be ready!
So, let’s use this Wix review to dig deeper, & quickly make a store that sells dog clothes!

So, naturally, you may be interested in, “why does that matter?“. From what I understand, the niche you choose will decide two things. The first is the multimedia placeholder that will be placed on your site. The second is the next step: the features that will be added to your site.
Depending on what you pick, you’ll be suggested the most important features such a website would require.

But again, you can scroll down a bit and choose to add whatever you like – Wix won’t put limits on just what you’ve chosen.

Then comes the fairly simple part of adding your company name.

And once you have finished with the general information…

You will be asked to choose the type of web page you prefer. As smart as the ADI is, it needs you to give it some style guidelines. If you already have a logo for your company, it can also adapt your website to the color scheme of your logo.

And there you have it: your website is almost finished. In the last step, you will be asked to choose the design you like the most.

And finally, you will have the opportunity to add something that you would really like to see on your website. All these sections are adapted to the existing theme of the ADI website.

And ta-da! The website is finished and waiting for you to publish it.

The process takes no more than 5 minutes: and during that time, you will have the opportunity to create a website that fits the style you prefer and has the pages you need.
If you’re looking for ease of use and a simple website builder that gets the job done, this is your choice.
Wix Editor
Wix Editor is the real Wix builder. The original, the one that put Wix on the map, keeps it on top, and the one that most Wix reviews choose to talk about. And it can be a little difficult to use from time to time, but it’s still a very streamlined setup experience.
Once you choose to create a website with the classic Wix website editor, you will be prompted to choose a template.

You have hundreds of options for dozens of different purposes. I decided to go with a financial technology company, and not long after, I found something very suitable. And then, a simple click on “Edit” took me straight to the Wix Editor, which looks a lot like this:

And from here, work on editing your website, and make it your own!
Editing your Wix site
Naturally, both builders also offer a different editing experience. Wix Editor lets you do everything – and the best feature of Wix ADI is …. allowing you to move to Wix Editor.
Let’s take a closer look at these two options:
Editing with Wix ADI
Wix ADI allows you to edit in blocks: meaning you can choose an entire section of your site, and then choose what to do with it. The “Design” section will allow you to choose an alternative look for the blocks.

And the “Edit” option will allow you to change the text and media.

You can also move the blocks up and down, as well as use the Plus button between sections to add new ones.

And honestly, that’s about it. The platform itself even suggests you move your website to Wix Editor City, where the grass is green and the editing options are beautiful!

Speaking of nice, this is a good time to talk about Wix’s other website building option.
Editing with Wix Editor
Let’s go back to the editor screenshot I took earlier.

There is a lot to do. You can drag and drop all the elements you see on this website. By clicking, you can edit them all separately.
The collection of icons on the left is the one that allows you to add new elements to your site. The “Add” option is the one that will show you most of the available elements.

The other options on the left include editing menus and pages, changing the background, color scheme, adding extra applications, photo galleries, media, blog posts, bookings, creating multilingual websites, and accessing various business tools. And the tools you can find there are too abundant even for this huge Wix review to even attempt to list them.
It’s a huge builder and, from time to time, you’ll come across something that will cause you to wonder. For example, when I made my own test website, I deleted almost half of it. And instead of the website simply getting smaller, parts of it were replaced by a huge blank space.
It sounded pretty bad, until I realized that all deletion processes go through clicking a button at the top, called “Zoom out and reorder“. This goes into a new mode, allowing you to easily reorder and delete any section of your site.

The same goes for adding and editing various elements of the website. Even though the “testimonial” element looked completely different from my color scheme, I had an easily accessible way to make any element match my preferred color scheme. I just had to know where to look.

“Knowing where to look” is the whole story of the Wix Editor. There is so much this platform can offer, you just have to be persistent and keep looking for the right solution.
Wix probably knows this, because at any time during editing, you can click on the “Help” option at the top and open the Editor’s Help Center, which will include articles and even tutorial videos.

And that’s the story. While Wix ADI has the basics, the Editor gives you everything. You can choose any of 900 templates, add video backgrounds, pages, galleries, forms, vector art, lists, boxes, audio and video players, insert custom code, social sharing bars, social media updates and much more.
Didn’t I mention something specific that you need? It’s probably there. You just have to know where to look.
Wix website scalability
If you are thinking about creating a website for your business or an online store, scalability is a very important issue. Can you make a scalable website with Wix?
Well, Wix only allows you to scale within their own system. While you can scale plans, you can’t change hosting – Wix keeps your website on their servers, which means you have to let Wix host your website permanently. This becomes a problem if you don’t like the servers or pricing, as you can’t relocate your site.
However, gone are the days when Wix did not allow its users to access the code. Scalability is less of a concern when you can implement almost unlimited customizations using HTML and CSS.
Unpublishing a Wix site
First of all, unpublishing and deleting a website are two different things. Unpublishing means that you are temporarily removing it from the public. Deleting removes your website completely from the Wix servers, which means you won’t get any of your content and data back.
If you are really sure you want to unpublish your site and not delete it, this is what you should do.
And that’s it. You can republish your website whenever you want following the same guidelines as for unpublishing.
Wix templates
Choosing a Wix theme will be a pretty serious decision because you are not allowed to change your theme once you have chosen it. And the platform won’t make it easy for you, as there are over 900 options to choose from.
Luckily, many of these topics are very targeted to specific audiences: this is what it looks like if you decide to choose “Business”.

And that’s what it will be, if you choose “Creative“. From the looks of it, it’s clear why Wix is one of the best website builders for artists.

The quality varies greatly. There are some that look impressive:

And, some look…genuinely woeful.

Regardless of my opinion or yours on any of these designs, it is worth noting that all of them are mobile-friendly and will allow you to accept visits from a wide range of devices.
So, despite the unfortunate fact that you can’t change your theme once you’ve chosen it (and have to create a new website instead), there’s still a very wide and lovely selection of themes to choose from. Don’t be discouraged by a few bad apples. Vintage on Wix will still give you a cornucopia of options to choose from, no matter what your business.
Wix business features
Wix’s target market is sole proprietors and small businesses. So it’s not surprising to see a pretty solid lineup of business features for management, marketing, branding, customer support, e-commerce, and more.
Overall, it is a decent package for a small business.
Wix eCommerce – create your online store
In the website builder market, Wix’s e-commerce integration is at the top. There are plenty of top-notch features available with the cheapest e-commerce plan, $23 a month, such as no limits on the number of products you can sell, and abandoned cart recovery for your users. You can also accept reservations, take online orders, and sell event tickets, without having to sign up for a more expensive plan or additional premium service. You can see how Wix compares to other online store builders in our roundup of the best e-commerce website builders.
Adding & Managing products
A simple Store Products menu allows you to view and add products to your website. There, you can easily choose between a physical product, i.e. a shippable product, or a digital product, i.e. a downloadable product.

Once inside, add all the details, i.e. images, videos, name, price, sale price (if any), options, etc.

You can also add it to a “collection” so that people filtering/searching in a particular category can find it there. For example, if you sell T-shirts and jeans, you can assign the product to their respective collections, so that each product is placed within other similar products.
Selling your services
If you’re looking for a photography website builder to showcase your art and sell services through your site, Wix is great for that too. Wix Bookings can help you manage your calendar and bookings, giving your users the opportunity to sign up quickly, and helping you avoid overbooking.

You can edit staff members’ working hours, add a time interval between appointments, and even connect the website via Zoom (best for consultants and coaches). However, there’s a caveat: to unlock Wix Bookings’ full suite of features, you’ll need to subscribe to their additional premium plan, which costs $17/month.
So you can look for other alternatives. There are freemium apps like Boom Calendar, Sell Tickets, Event Viewer and Schedulista Booking. And there are also some decent free options like Google Event Calendar or Bandsintown, which allow you to do similar things, without spending anything.
Wix SEO – a solid suite of options
In general, website builders are not known for their incredible search engine optimization. They are not what you choose to rank high in search engine results. But here’s the thing…
Wix is actually pretty good when it comes to SEO, and has done a decent job adapting to suit beginner users and their needs – claiming a top spot on our list of the best website builders for SEO.
Wix will give you an SEO plan to follow in order to be seen in your preferred search results. In addition to that, you will be given the option to make redirects, add custom URLs, access the XML sitemap, edit your robots.txt map and the like.

As for content, you have options to change/add captions and descriptions, customize titles, and add alt tags to images,
Overall, Wix is a pretty decent website builder for SEO. There is a lot to do for SEO-savvy beginners.
Emails & Marketing
For most companies, marketing is their bread and butter. For those people, Wix has a complete three-course meal, and they call it Ascend. It’s an in-house solution that combines email marketing with social media content, contacts, invoices, and more.
It allows you to quickly create and send content to reach your audience. Personally, I love their simple email builder, which allows anyone to create a compelling and attention-grabbing message.

Similarly, you can use this tool to create and distribute social media posts, make promotional videos and connect with other advertising and marketing tools to get visitors.

There are several pre-designed templates for you to choose from, so if your design skills are as good as mine, you’re in luck!

You can also connect your existing email marketing applications, such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact, and connect your analytics to track crucial statistics such as open rate or CTR.
However, once again there is a caveat, and once again, it concerns pricing – the premium version of Wix Ascend starts at $5 a month. It’s not an excessive amount, but it’s something to consider before jumping in.
Wix mobile app
If you want to manage your business or website on the go, you’ll enjoy the Wix mobile app. I liked it. In fact, you can literally set up your entire website using nothing but their mobile app. And if you already have one, you can manage almost everything from the app.

I had no problem adding the products & setting up the sales.

And for example, if your website has live chat functions, this is the application that you will also be able to use to respond to your visitors.
Overall, during this Wix review, I enjoyed using the application: it has just the right amount of functionality to save you from pulling out your computer every time you need to do something. Great!
Wix app store
For every built-in feature Wix has, there are dozens more available from third parties. And Wix App Market is where it’s at. With hundreds of options for marketing, e-commerce, services, media, design and communications, there’s plenty to choose from.

Wix also joins the party. With 50 “Made by Wix” apps: all free, freemium, and paid, you can choose between the company’s own or third-party apps.
Sometimes, third-party apps get a lot more love from users. And it’s great to see Wix allowing them to thrive.

With the in-house Wix Forms application receiving mixed reviews, you’ll also have the opportunity to use the free 123 Form Builder instead.

This is one of Wix’s greatest strengths – even if some features or internal apps don’t work, there’s still a community that can offer suitable alternatives. And the Wix App Market is where it all comes together.
And to conclude the entire “Wix Business Features” section, I would say:
Wix has made sure that small businesses have full access to a wide variety of features. Some of these may cost more, but with many alternative options available, there’s still plenty to get excited about, even if you’re on a limited budget.
Wix Website Builders customer support
If you ever have a problem while building your website, it’s always good to know that you’ll have good customer service to fall back on. Now, Wix offers you three ways to get customer support.
Of the three, the callback line might be the most reliable option: you’re sure to get help from a person. Personally, I tried to get in touch with a real representative while chatting with a bot, but to no avail: it only offered me to submit a ticket or consult the Help Center.

Help Center: it is well organized and has answers to problems that may arise in both normal and ADI editors.
A great advantage of Wix support is that it is available to both free and paid account holders: you can receive premium support for free. Even if that premium support is just talking to a chatbot…
Overall, Wix offers very good customer service options. The knowledge base is very extensive and well-curated, having almost all the answers to any problem that may arise.
Wix performance
Website builders are not usually known for their fast performance. With so many editable details, complex site structures, and a focus on having “as much of everything as possible,” it’s no surprise to see Wix perform a bit sluggish. However, poor performance results don’t translate to negative performance in real life.
For the final showdown, I put my own test website through GTMetrix, which measures site load time and overall structure and gives a final score.

A D score and “56%” in performance sound bad. But during this Wix review, I visited the website a few times and didn’t notice a massive load time. In fact, everything was surprisingly fast.
My experience is also supported by GTMetrix. Although the website takes 8.4 seconds to load completely, it only takes about 3 seconds to be fully interactive and load most of the visible elements, and that’s a perfectly fine result.
So what should you take away from this? Wix is not a super-optimized speed demon, and it shows: but for regular users, the loading speed of your Wix page won’t be a problem.
