Hover Domain Review: What Is Hover?

Hover Domains is a domain registrar founded in 2009 as an offshoot of Tucows Inc (the second largest ICANN-accredited online domain registrar).
Hover’s modus operandi is that they stick to what they know, and that’s domains.
| Support | Help Desk, Email, Live Chat, Phone & Knowledge Base |
| Free DNS | Yes |
| Free Domain Privacy | Yes |
| Best For | No Fuss Pricing |
| Strengths | Easy To Use |
| Weaknesses | Expensive & No Web Hosting |
But let’s face it, you probably only know them from their podcast ads on shows like Hello Internet and 99% Invisible. Even though Grey and Roman promote them, you’ll want to know what they’re really like.
Well, this domain registrar is dedicated exclusively to the purchase, management and transfer of domains on their platform.
Hover offers email services, but does not offer any other complementary products such as website hosting, website builders, etc.
Hover Pricing
| Domain Ext. | Registration | Renewal | Transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| .com | $14.99/yr. | $16.99/yr. | $14.99/yr. |
| .net | $15.49/yr. | $17.49/yr. | $15.49/yr. |
| .org | $13.99/yr. | $15.99/yr. | $13.99/yr. |
| .biz | $18.99/yr. | $18.99/yr. | $18.99/yr. |
| .co | $27.99/yr. | $27.99/yr. | $27.99/yr. |
It is important to remember that a domain is not a website. It is not an email, an application or any other service. It is simply your online address. It helps people locate you. If you want to set up a website, you will still need to get hosting or a website builder/e-commerce provider that provides hosting (which Hover does not provide).
I’ll go into this in more depth on the pros and cons, but it’s an important distinction to make up front, as it helps us understand what Hover’s goal is.
It’s not about being an all-in-one solution, quite the opposite. They focus solely on simplicity. It’s about getting your domain and allowing you to use it wherever you need it through application integrations.

Positive of Hover
Interface
Hover’s interface is very easy to use. It is clean, simple and easy to navigate. The domain search is the highlight of the home page, making it clear exactly where to go to get started.

Once you search for a domain, you get a clean list with an exact match and other recommendations. Hover offers a lot of top-level domain options (more on this in a minute) and gives an easy way to browse through them with different filter categories.

The checkout process is also simple. It took me four easy steps to move my domain from the cart to the control panel. For a domain registrar that prides itself on simplicity, Hover definitely delivers.
Variety of TLDs
Now that ICANN is allowing more top-level domains (TLDs) beyond the generic .com/.net/.org, website owners need to make sure their domain registrar has all the ones they want (especially if you buy in bulk). Hover has plenty of TLD options beyond generic domains, which are broken down by category to make it easy to find the perfect match. they offer over 460 TLDs.

Hover also offers a lot of country-specific domains for international use, so it’s a great option if you need to buy domains for multiple countries/regions or even cities.

Transparent Pricing
Domain registrars use a range of pricing types, from cheap starting prices with high renewal rates to expensive domains with cheap renewals.
Hover is pretty straightforward with their pricing. Their table breaks down the purchase, renewal and transfer prices for all of their TLD types. Their rates include WHOIS privacy protection, which means that your personal data, such as name, address, and contact information, is protected from spammers, marketers, and others who may perform a WHOIS search.
However, the prices do not include ICANN fees, which means that you will have to add an additional $0.18 to your purchase (more on this in the cons).

Hover also offers discounted renewal rates when you have 10 or more domains registered with them. You can see how prices are broken down by domain ranges in their pricing table.

“Real Person” Support
Although I have not had to contact support, Hover is known for their excellent customer service. They claim to hate the phone tree and, as such, do not use automated systems. Whether you call on the phone, email or live chat, you are connected to a person.

In terms of coverage, Hover offers fairly extensive hours. You can contact them weekdays (8:00 am to 11:00 pm ET) and weekends (8:00 am to 8:00 pm ET) via email, phone or live chat.
Their “Need Help” tab also follows you throughout the site and offers frequently asked questions and answers, as well as a link to their live chat and additional support information.

Integrations
While Hover focuses solely on domain (and email) registration and management, it offers a plethora of applications with which you can easily integrate your domain, from website builders like Wix to e-commerce platforms like Shopify.

Aside from the integration options, the actual process of integrating your domain is fairly straightforward. Hover provides step-by-step instructions for each application, making it easy even for less tech-savvy website owners.
They will even take care of some of the work for you (like adding your DNS records to connect your domain to your web platform).

Data Protection
One of the things that struck me the most when registering a domain with Hover was how much they protected my data. There is nothing worse than registering a domain and getting tons of spam emails immediately afterwards (or being redirected by ads left and right).
WHOIS privacy protects this to some extent, but Hover goes a step further during the purchase process by allowing you to select how your data is shared. I also received an email after purchasing my domain asking me to set my data usage consent preferences.

Negative of Hover
No Complementary Products
The fact that Hover focuses only on domains is an advantage, but also a disadvantage.
There are several products that are almost always associated with a domain. If you want your site to be SSL secure, you will need an SSL certificate associated with the domain. You can buy it separately from a third party, but in my experience, managing it with your domain is easier.
As for hosting, I like to separate my domains from my hosting, but many owners prefer to have hosting and domains bundled into one (although not ideal from a performance standpoint).
Namecheap has competitive hosting; GoDaddy offers affordable managed WordPress hosting with domains. And most hosting companies offer domain registration (or even free domains) with the purchase of hosting (such as InMotion Hosting or Bluehost).
These types of products are simply not available with Hover. You can buy the domain email (AKA matching your domain name to an email address (or several), but if you’re looking for the convenience of having your hosting and website builder on a single platform, you’re out of luck.
High Pricing
Although Hover offers straightforward pricing (which is a plus), the downside is that they tend to be more expensive than other registrars – and this is the biggest disadvantage against them as a domain registrar.
You can get a .com domain at Namecheap for $10.98 (plus ICANN’s $0.18 fee), which then renews at $12.98. With Hover, that same .com domain will cost you $12.99 and renew at $14.99.

The price difference is even greater when it comes to other specialized TLDs. See the comparison of this .condos domain between Hover and Namecheap.
If you want to save money on the purchase or renewal of a domain and don’t mind the cross-selling that registrars often do, there are better options than Hover.
If you don’t mind spending a little more for a domain registrar that is simple and doesn’t cross-sell, Hover is not a bad option, but you should consider all the costs.
