Free VPS Hosting: A Practical Case Study!
If we are looking for truly free VPS hosting providers, there are quite a few options. Yes, they promise you absolutely free services. No trials, no credit cards, just free resources. Sound suspicious? Well, it does to me, so I decided to see what’s really hiding under all those promises.
Here are the Hosting Providers I’m Going to Briefly Review Today:

FreeVPSHosti – 3 free VPS hosting plans that don’t work | ✔ | Visit FreeVPSHosti |

A quick disclaimer: we do not recommend using free VPS hosting for any website, especially professional ones. There are 3 amazing cheap alternatives listed below that are much more secure and actually work.
1. AlaVPS

Resources | 1CPU core, 25GB SSD Storage, 1GB RAM, & 1TB Bandwidth |
Free Plan | ✔ |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
AlaVPS is the first provider on this list to offer free VPS hosting. The host seems to offer everything from shared hosting to dedicated servers. And interestingly, all types of hosting have a free plan. Yes, even dedicated servers. So, does the provider really offer what it promises, or is it just a scam? Let’s see.
First of all, you have the option to choose from 4 VPS plans, but since we are here for the free plan, let’s take a look at that.
The free plan comes with 1 CPU core, 25GB of SSD storage, 1GB of RAM & 1TB of bandwidth. That’s a very generous offer, especially for a free service. So this already raises a question – how is this possible? The answer is simple: it’s not.
Wondering why? Well… let me walk you through the registration.
And this is where I’m still at. My personal information is gone, I have no free VPS hosting and support is non-existent. At least no one has asked for my credit card information.
2. VPSWala

Resources | 1 CPU Core, 10GB SSD Storage, 1GB RAM, 1 TB Bandwidth |
Free Plan | ✔ |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
Just like AlaVPS, VPSWala also offers everything you could want: shared, VPS, cloud and dedicated hosting services. However, the provider goes the extra mile and gives you a choice between Linux and Windows VPS hosting. Impressive. Let’s explore further.
Again, it looks like the free plan is meant to be a trial plan before you buy a real deal. Yes, the provider sells other plans, and not cheap ones.
But back to the free plan, you’re promised 1 CPU core, 10GB of SSD storage, 1GB of RAM, 1 TB of bandwidth, and 24/7 support. While the storage is a bit less generous than with AlaVPS, the rest is the same. So again, good deal, right?
Well, I tried to get the services & Here’s what happened:
VPSAWA is only a second provider in this quest for justice, but I already see a pattern. The provider gets your information (God knows what for), and you are left with a product that doesn’t work.
3. GratisVPS

Resources | N/A |
Free Plan | 180-day Trial |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
When it comes to free VPS hosting, GratisVPS offers a free trial instead of a free plan. But, to be fair, the offer sounds tempting – the trial is for an impressive 180 days, and you’re not asked to leave your credit card information. This isn’t a very common practice, so what’s the catch? Let’s see.
This provider seems to be the one that offers the least services so far – VPS only.
It is also the only provider that goes above and beyond, but it doesn’t. Let me explain what I mean. There is 0 information on what the trial package is supposed to include. I even contacted support to get an answer on what I will receive. Guess what, no response, the usual.
However, when you choose the free trial, you can choose from 11 different operating systems and 8 server locations. This is the extra mile I was referring to. None of the others give you this much freedom.
Too bad it doesn’t do any good. Apparently, there are no servers available. With any location or combination of software. So… no servers, I guess.
So this is where I’m at – a bunch of options, and none of them work. Although I’m surprised the provider didn’t ask me for a bunch of personal information. But then again, I think it survives because of the abundance of ads on the site. For the love of God, don’t click on them. Who knows where they will lead you and your data.
4. FreeVPSHosti

Resources | 1 CPU Core, 15GB SSD Storage, 1GB RAM, & 1000GB Bandwidth |
Free Plan | ✔ |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
FreeVPSHosti stands out among other free VPS providers. Why? The provider offers everything: domains, remote servers, shared hosting, WordPress, cloud and VPS. The interesting part – everything is free. There are no paid options. Interesting, let’s dig a little deeper.
When it comes to VPS plans, you can choose from 3 free options.
Depending on the plan you choose, the resources will vary. However, you can expect 1 to 4 CPU cores, 1 to 4 GB of RAM, 15 to 300 GB of SSD storage and 1000 to 2000 GB of bandwidth. They even promise you a free SSL. How generous.
After digging around a bit more, I discovered that while the first plan is a simple plan, the other 2 are affiliate accounts that ask you to refer people to use FreeVPSHosti. Sorry, but I think I’m going to pass. So the entry-level plan is.
Here’s how it went:
And this is where I am still at. As with most providers, my information is long gone, I have no services, and spam letters could flood my email at some point.
5. InstaFree

Resources | 1 CPU Core, 5GB SSD Storage, 256MB RAM, & 50GB Bandwidth |
Free Plan | ✔ |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
InstaFree has been around since 2004, but I can’t say I’ve heard much about it. Or at all, to be fair. The company sells shared, VPS and reseller hosting solutions with cPanel integration. However, the main focus is still on VPS.
For shared and reseller hosting, the provider only offers 1 paid and 1 free plan, while VPS has 3 paid and 1 free plan.
If you opt for the free plan, you are promised 1 CPU core, 5 GB of SSD storage, 256 MB of RAM and 50 GB of bandwidth. It’s far from the biggest offer on this list, but it’s something nonetheless.
Now let’s move on to the interesting stuff:
Time and time again, these free services turn out to be useless. If the offer seems too good to be true, chances are it is. We’ve been taught from a young age that nothing is free. And it couldn’t be more true in the world of hosting.
6. GigaRocket

Resources | 1 CPU, 25GB HDD Storage, 1GB RAM, & 150GB Bandwidth |
Free Plan | ✔ |
Free VPS Plan Works | ✘ |
Scam | ✔ |
GigaRocket was originally a free shared hosting provider with cPanel integration. However, after almost 7 years of service, the provider no longer offers this service. What it does offer are paid shared and reseller hosting solutions, as well as free VPS hosting. Interestingly, there are no paid VPS plans.
Speaking of free VPS hosting, GigaRocket offers a single option.
The plan comes with 1 CPU, 25GB of HDD storage, 1GB of RAM, and 150GB of bandwidth, and it’s a pretty decent deal. You might be wondering, what do you have to do to get this goldmine?
Simple, become a regular on the GigaRocket community forum. And not by choice. It’s a real requirement.
First of all, you have to make 25 posts on the forum to be eligible for VPS services. But that’s not all. Every month you have to make 15 posts. And God forbid you forget to do that….. Goodbye to your account and your site, you enemy of the community forum….
Conclusion
Unfortunately, if you are looking for a completely free VPS hosting service, it is impossible to find a reliable one. Most of the tested totally free VPS hostings aim to collect your personal data, lure you into a subscription or simply do not deliver what they promise. For this reason, we have tested a dozen free VPS hosting providers and selected the best ones.
A completely free VPS hosting service is not possible. That’s why we recommend you to choose a reputable provider like Hostinger, which offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and is not out to scam you. It includes all the premium features in the trial version, works at lightning-fast speeds and provides you with excellent customer support that is ready to answer your questions.
